How the tip is calculated

The calculator multiplies the bill amount by the tip percentage, adds that tip to the bill, and divides both amounts by the number of people. It keeps the unrounded values through the calculation and rounds only the displayed currency amounts.

Tip amount = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100)

Total per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people

Worked example

For a $68.50 bill with a 20% tip, the tip is $13.70 and the total is $82.20. Split between two people, each person pays $41.10, including $6.85 of the tip.

Should the tip use the pre-tax or post-tax bill?

This tool treats the number you enter as the tip base. If you prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal. If you prefer the convenience of tipping on the final receipt total, enter the post-tax amount. The calculator does not silently add sales tax or choose one convention for you.

Rounding a split bill

Currency rounding can leave a cent or two when a total is divided among several people. The displayed per-person amount is a planning number; if the exact rounded shares do not add back to the receipt total, assign the leftover cents to one person.

FAQ

How much is a 20% tip?

Move the decimal point one place left to find 10%, then double it. On a $50 bill, 10% is $5 and 20% is $10.

Does splitting the bill change the tip percentage?

No. The calculator finds the tip on the full bill first, then divides the bill and tip equally. Each person's share carries the same tip percentage.

Can I enter a custom tip percentage?

Yes. Type any non-negative percentage in the Tip field; the preset buttons are only shortcuts.
