Why net worth matters (and what it isn't)

Net worth is the single best snapshot of your financial position — but it's a snapshot, not the whole story. Two people with the same net worth can be in totally different shapes:

  • $200k in retirement accounts vs $200k in home equity: one is liquid, one isn't.
  • $50k net worth at age 25 vs $50k at age 55: the first is on track, the second isn't.
  • $1M net worth with $20k income vs $1M with $200k income: very different runway.

The "percentile vs age bracket" comparison gives some context but should not be confused with prescription. The right question isn't "where am I?" but "is my net worth growing year over year?"

What counts as an asset

Anything you own that has resale value. Be conservative — use realistic market values, not insurance replacement values. The car you paid $40k for two years ago is worth ~$25k now; don't list it at sticker price.

FAQ

Should I include my primary residence?

Yes, but be honest about both sides — include the home's market value as an asset and the mortgage balance as a liability. Many people omit the mortgage, which inflates net worth.

What about pre-tax 401K balances?

Include the gross balance. Yes, you'll pay tax when you withdraw, but that's true of all pre-tax accounts and the standard convention is to track the gross.

Where do the percentile numbers come from?

The US Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances (2022 release). The Fed runs it every 3 years. The 2025 release lands in late 2026.
