What MET means
MET ("metabolic equivalent of task") measures activity intensity relative to sitting still:
- 1 MET — sitting at rest, ~1 cal/kg/hour.
- 2 METs — slow walking. Doubles your resting calorie burn.
- 5 METs — moderate exercise. Brisk walking, easy cycling.
- 10 METs — running, vigorous cycling, sports.
The formula: calories/min = (MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg) / 200.
Limits of the estimate
MET values are averages across many subjects in lab conditions. Your actual burn depends on fitness level, body composition, terrain, weather, and effort. Heart-rate-based estimates (from a fitness tracker) are more personalized but still imperfect.
